Stephen J. Kelin, CPA, JD
Nonprofit Tax Principal
Stephen J. Kelin, CPA, JD is a principal with Gelman, Rosenberg & Freedman CPAs. He co-leads the firm’s group of professionals who provide comprehensive consulting and tax compliance services to more than 500 nonprofit clients. That responsibility includes coordinating all tax planning, return preparation, representation on IRS audits and preparation of ruling requests from the IRS.
Prior to joining the firm in 2003, he worked for KPMG LLP for nearly three decades, including 19 years as a partner and 10 years as the firm’s Mid-Atlantic Tax-Exempt Practice Leader, providing extensive tax and consulting services to a wide range of tax-exempt organizations. In that role, he helped lead the formation of a nationwide network of tax professionals focused on serving exempt organizations.
Mr. Kelin speaks regularly to industry groups on new developments. He has recently presented on such topics as Form 990 from a board member’s perspective, lobbying and political intervention in an election year, and maintaining public charity status.
Throughout his career, his clients have included well-known public charities, universities, private foundations, trade associations, healthcare providers and labor unions. Mr. Kelin applies his unique knowledge and expertise in tax-exempt issues to a diverse nonprofit client base. His client responsibilities have included consulting with many large national and international nonprofit organizations with complex tax planning needs, and advising clients on the risks and benefits of exempt status. His experience includes educating clients on special regulations affecting nonprofits, such as lobbying and political activity restrictions, intermediate sanctions, unrelated business activities, and cost allocation and charitable giving rules. Finally, he monitors the changing statutory and regulatory environments concerning reporting and operational requirements to assist his clients in managing risks and taking maximum advantage of the benefits of tax-exempt status.
