JONATHAN SMITH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
How do you plan to use the funds?
“Well, I am still working on an effective way to use the funds. The Legal Aid industry is going through a tremendous, exciting transition and we will use the funds to add to the organizations staff and programs, the 25th anniversary, and secure assistance. We eventually want to build a second tier of leadership and strengthen our team so that we can do as well as possible.”
What does it mean to you to win the award?
“It has been extremely humbling. I came to work as a poverty advocate and have worked on a lot of those issues. In the past I hadn’t really thought about my strengths in program management and leadership, but after receiving this award I now understand how much leadership matters, and how important it is to younger lawyers. It’s humbling to support them and know that I strengthen their ability to do their work.”
How do you believe it can help your organization?
“Again I feel that it will allow us to strengthen our program as well as reflect on our operations support, structure, and moving forward. It helped our organization to become recognized and put our name out there. It also provided us with the funds to further support Legal Aid. Although the process of winning the award was very time consuming, I see it as a good thing because each moment created space for reflection.”
RHONDA BUCKLEY, FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
PATRICIA M. SITAR CENTER OF THE ARTS
How do you plan to use the funds?
“I am working with a consultant on public speaking skills and really appreciate having this opportunity. In addition, the funds that can be used for staff development will be used for group Spanish lessons for the staff. We will all benefit from your generosity!”
What does it mean to you to win the award?
“It is so important that the Center for Nonprofit Advancement and Gelman, Rosenberg and Freedman are acknowledging the work of nonprofit executives in the community and it is very special to me to be in this group of honorees.”
How do you believe it can help your organization?
“Winning the Excel award has been a wonderful boost for the Sitar Center. It has increased our visibility and allowed the funds for increasing our skills. The bottom line is that the Excel Award allows us to better serve the children and that is what we are here for!”
ADAM TENNER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
METRO TEENAIDS
How do you plan to use the funds?
“I haven’t quite decided yet. There are many options to choose from—I’m stuck between taking formal classes at a university and taking coaching sessions. The hard part about being a busy executive is that my needs come secondary.”
What does it mean to you to win the award?
“Winning was a milestone for the organization in terms of tracking various moments in its history since I took over 5 years ago. It was a clear moment where we were able to look to the future instead of the past.”
How do you believe it can help your organization?
“It was an honor to be presented the award in front of colleagues and other organizations and to receive positive feedback from those who had heard of the award. In addition, it raised awareness about HIV and AIDS in young people in the Washington Metro area.”
