Local tax protestors are threatening a Lady Godiva-style protest outside the capitol in Albany to make their point, reports the Oneida Daily Dispatch in upstate New York.
Lady Godiva was an 11th century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who, according to legend, rode naked through the streets of Coventry, England, to gain a remission of the oppressive taxation imposed by her husband on his tenants.
“We do have a Lady Godiva who rides her horse, and we attract a lot of people because she’s wearing a body suit and she’s very voluptuous and we get a whole crowd,” said Gioia Shebar of TaxNightmare.org, an activist from Gardiner, N.Y.
“If we send her nude to Albany, we’ll get a lot more attention,” she added. “We’re getting more and more aggressive.”
“Would anyone remember the story of Godiva if she lowered Coventry’s taxes without taking her clothes off?” – Daniel Donoghue, Lady Godiva: A Literary History of the Legend
