The IRS has jumped on the social media bandwagon.

You can check on the status of your refund, get updates on new developments in the tax area and even get some helpful tax tips.

The IRS is on the following types of social media:

1. Twitter – The IRS provides tax-related tips and news for tax professionals. You can follow the IRS at @IRSnews, @IRStaxpros and IRSenEspanol. The IRS’s taxpayer advocate service can even be followed at @YourVoiceAtIRS.

2. IRS2Go – This free app allows you to check on the status of your refund, get tax news or follow the IRS on Twitter. It is available in both English and Spanish.

3. YouTube – The IRS offers short videos on a variety of topics. They are available in English, Spanish and American Sign Language.

4. Tumblr – The IRS’s Tumblr blog provides tax news.

5. Facebook – The IRS has its own Facebook page, which provides information for both taxpayers and tax professionals. You can also access the Taxpayer Advocate Service through Facebook.

6. Podcasts – The IRS’s podcasts provide useful tips on many topics. You can access the podcasts at www.irs.gov/uac/Multimedia-Center under the Audio subhead.

The IRS goes to great lengths to protect your privacy on social media. It never discloses confidential taxpayer information. The main use of social media is as a source to provide useful information to taxpayers and tax professionals.

In addition to social media, other great information can be found at the IRS’s main Web page at www.irs.gov.
